Let’s get this out of the way early – buying a better office chair might help. But it probably won’t fix your pain.
That’s not what most people want to hear, especially after spending $700, $1,000, or more on something marketed as “ergonomic”.
And yet, this is what I see every week.
The uncomfortable truth
People often come to me after they’ve already upgraded their chair.
They’ve done what seemed logical:
- Bought something high-end
- Adjusted a few levers
- Expected relief
But the pain is still there.
Sometimes it’s exactly the same. Sometimes it’s worse.
That’s because the chair was never the real problem.
What’s actually going on
Pain at a desk is rarely caused by a single thing. It’s usually a combination of:
- How long you sit
- How often you move (or don’t)
- Your screen position
- Your keyboard and mouse setup
- Your work habits
- Your stress levels
- Your overall physical capacity
A chair is just one piece of that puzzle. And on its own, it’s a weak one.
Why the “perfect chair” doesn’t exist
There’s a belief that somewhere out there is a chair that will:
- Hold you in perfect posture
- Eliminate discomfort
- Work for 8+ hours a day
That belief is flawed. Your body isn’t designed to stay in one position all day—even a “perfect” one.
The best posture is simply your next posture. No chair can move for you.
Where people go wrong
Most people treat discomfort like a product problem – “If I just buy the right thing, this will go away.”
So they:
- Upgrade the chair
- Add a cushion
- Try a standing desk
- Buy another accessory
But they never change the way they work. That’s why nothing sticks.
What actually works
When things improve, it’s usually because we address the bigger picture:
1. Setup
This is where most people get it wrong, and where the biggest gains are. Yes, your chair matters; but so does everything around it. In fact, I often see more improvement from adjusting the following than from changing the chair itself:
- Screen height
- Desk setup
- Keyboard and mouse position
This is exactly where Ergo Experts comes in.
Rather than guessing, we come to you and assess your actual workspace; how you sit, how you move, and how you work across the day. Small, targeted changes here can make a significant difference very quickly.
2. Movement
This is the big one. If you sit still for hours, no chair will save you.
Regular movement (standing, walking, even shifting position) reduces load on the body far more effectively than any piece of equipment.
No product replaces this.
3. Habits
How you work matters. Do you:
- Take breaks?
- Reset your posture?
- Change tasks?
Or do you lock in and push through for hours?
Your habits will either support you or work against you.
So… should you still buy a new chair?
Yes; but only if it is really needed and with the right expectations.
A good chair should:
- Support you
- Be adjustable
- Fit your body and your workspace
What it doesn’t need to do is cost a fortune.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to spend $1,000+ to get a “good” chair. In reality, we regularly recommend and supply chairs in the $375–$600 range that work extremely well—when they’re matched properly to the person and their setup.
That’s the key.
Through Ergo Experts, we don’t just tell you what to buy, we bring a range of chairs to you in our mobile setup so you can actually sit in them, compare them, and see what feels right in your own workspace. Then we let you trial it for a week.
Because choosing a chair based on a website or a 5-minute sit in a showroom is very different to choosing one that works for your body, at your desk, doing your job.
The takeaway
If you’re in pain at your desk, don’t just ask:
“What chair should I buy?”
Start asking:
- How am I working each day?
- How often am I moving?
- Is my setup actually right for me?
Because once you get those things right, the chair becomes a lot less important.
And that’s when things actually start to change.
